Українська ікона, що бере свої витоки від візантійського мистецтва, а в подальшому зазнала певних західноєвропейських впливів - унікальне явище світової культури. Її особливий стиль яскраво засвідчують твори сакрального мистецтва з колекції Національного художнього музею України. Альбом побудовано за хронологічним принципом. На 256 сторінках перед читачем розгортається історія розвитку та еволюції українського іконопису. Каталог наприкінці альбому подає інформацію про походження ікон та багатий довідковий матеріал. Книгу надруковано на дуже якісному крейдованому папері щільністю 170 г/м2.

 

The Ukrainian icon is a unique phenomenon in the context of not only national culture but world culture as well. Originating from Byzantine art and experiencing later certain West European influences, the Ukrainian icon developed its own, peculiar style in which the image is recognised by 'a particularly Ukrainian imprint.' This is evident in many works from the collection of the National Art Museum of Ukraine.

This album of icon painting is a tribute to the memory of Larysa Chlenova, a veteran scholar of the National Art Museum who devoted her entire life to the museum, namely to the research and collecting of invaluable works of Ukrainian sacral art. Her expeditions enriched the museum collection of icons with such outstanding masterpieces as Saints Catherine and Barbara the Great Martyrs, Saints Anastasia and Juliana the Great Martyrs, and sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul from Pidhaitsi.

Based on the chronological principle, the album opens with the exemplary classical relief of St. George from St. George's Monastery in the town of Balaklava, the Crimea (near the ancient Greek polis of Chersonessos). The history of this relief, like the history of St. George himself, is full of tragic pages (read about this in the album). Bright examples of the Volynian circle of monuments (The Mother of God Hodegetria, 14th c.), Halych (original, simplified to naivete Apostles Peter and Paul, late 15th c.), and icons from the Feast tier of the iconostasis from the church that stood in the environs of Kalush, Ivano-Frankivsk Region, characterise West Ukrainian icon painting. Icons from Left-Bank Ukraine-from the Berezna iconostasis in Chernihiv Region and from the Dormition Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra-represent the acme of the Baroque art.

Icons reproduced in this edition characterise to some extent the evolution of Ukrainian icon painting. The catalogue at the end of the album offers information on the icons origin and is a rich reference source.

Ukrainian Icon Painting of the 12th-19th Century from the Collection of the National Art Museum of Ukraine is the first of three editions intended to present the most fully the priceless treasures of the National Art Museum of Ukraine. Two following albums will cover the creativity of the best Ukrainian artists of the 19th and 20th-21st century. In prospect-a fundamental publication of scientific catalogues of the entire museum collection, which would elucidate the centenary assiduous and selfless work of all generations of museum scholars on collecting and research of the best works in Ukrainian fine arts.
